Welcome!

Harmony, Theory & Outlining Changes is the second volume in my educational series Pathways To Jazz & Fusion. It's designed for rock, pop and blues guitarists who want to explore jazz/fusion, or generally be more comfortable soloing and outlining chord changes.

This is a course with over of structured video tuition that will gradually take you from almost zero understanding to having a good grasp of functional harmony and chord-scale theory. It will also teach you how to analyse the harmony of jazz and fusion tunes, putting it all into practise with exercises for soloing through changes. Eventually you will be able to tackle complex chord progressions with a deep, long lasting connection to the fretboard.

The course is comprised of four sections, broken down into digestible, time-stamped video files. This allows beginners to work sequentially and intermediate players to dip-in where required. Once finished, it can be used as a great reference tool.

In addition to the video lessons, there are supporting PDFs and dozens of backing tracks to help give context when you're exploring these new sounds and practising the exercises.

Required Knowledge

The course starts as close to zero as possible, but does make the assumption that you play guitar already(!) and are at least aware of the concepts from Pathways Vol 1. So I'm assuming that you:

1. Can see root notes on the fretboard and know what intervals are.

2. Know the major scales, or at least how to work out what notes are in them.

3. Are comfortable with or aware of the cycle of 5ths.

You certainly don’t need to have mastered these concepts, but some familiarity is helpful to get the most out of this course.

FAQ:

A: No, it's not essential, but the first tutorial covers how to visualise the fretboard and is referenced throughout the course. The only assumptions I make are listed above.

A: You don't have to as long as your visualisation is strong.

A: Hah! I need to sleep for a month straight before I even begin to think about Vol 3.

A: This course has three times more content than Vol 1, and is orders of magnitude greater in scope and ambition.  It is a course rather than a one-off lesson or tutorial. Once Pathways is a trilogy (!), think of Vol 2 as 'Empire' but with fewer paternity plot twists or incidents of hand chopping.
